Achronal Dungeon is a one screen dungeon crawler puzzle where you use time travel exploits to escape an initially impossible dungeon. It was made for the Thinky Puzzle Games Confounding Calendar 2022 Gamejam. It's inspired by Tower of the Sorcerer ('magic tower' genre) and Braid. The effects of 'green' things are retroactive, allowing you to create new timelines where the dungeon can be escaped.

Controls:

* WASD or Mouse to Move

* Mouse Over to Inspect

* Z to Undo

* R to Restart

* X+Dir to Use Greenality

* Esc to Meta-Restart (refunding Greenalities)

* X to Use Warp Wings

Extra controls;

* Shift+dir to run.

* Shift+undo to undo just an individual step.

* M or click on the note icon in the top right corner to toggle SFX.

* P or click on the slime icon in the top right corner to toggle animations.

If you have fully completed the game, try finding all four endings, then try competing for secret achievements (see v1.3 devlog)!

If you'd like to try another 'magic tower' game like this, I can highly recommend Deep Rune by J.C. Bailey.

nice game, tho its very hard

Thanks! My Confounding Calendar 2023 entry will be easy, look forward to it in December.

Finally got my first ending!

Grats!

this is a fascinating puzzle, I love tinkering over strategies in games like this. the greenality mechanic is especially exciting because, every time I realize the implications of applying it to a different kind of tile, the possibility space explodes! I've gotten three of the normal endings, and I'll probably be mulling over strategies for the secret endings or other personal goals for a while. thank you for making this!

Thanks for playing, I'm very pleased with the reception!

Stumbled on this from a tweet, and this is a very clean game!

I really like how you took the basic combat and added one seemingly small twist which ends up making a really good basis for a puzzle game.

Thank you! If you like this kind of time travel nonsense, follow me; I'll be releasing a new puzzle game in a month or two.

no clue what to do, anyone have a minor tip?

First room: The gimmick of this game is that 'green' things have a retroactive effect on the game. Try undoing after getting the green sword, paying attention to your stats changing (or rather, what stats DON'T change).

Using Greenality #1: You can always meta-restart (ESC) to change your mind, so experiment by using it on everything you can think of and building a mental model of what the consequences are. It is not required to do the absolute most optimal use of Greenality #1 to beat the game, but you may enjoy discovering how some uses of it are better (or even strictly better) than others.

Making it from Greenality #1 to Greenality #2: Both remaining Greenalities are heavily guarded. Try to decide if you're killing the monster to get to the Greenality, or if your goal is to reach other items lying around the dungeon and to discover their properties through experimentation. This is as much a rule discovery puzzle as it is an optimization puzzle, expect to be in both 'modes' at different times.

Thanks, I got the tunnel ending with your hints :)

Nice!

Also please add a meta-undo. I managed to green myself and then got trapped by restarting in the wrong place.

Meta-undo is something I want too but technically difficult to understand, maybe I'll figure it out and add it one day. Until then, be careful while green, you can trap yourself in unexpected ways.

good game.

found three of the four endings.

heroic,green and ascent.

guessing the last ending is either using a greenality on the exit or reaching it without wings and without greening myself or the headband.

GG, thanks for playing! You're on the right track to find the fourth ending.

found it!

tunnel end accomplished. :)

curious though what would happen if you green the exit

Why not give it a go?

I don't know how to

Edit: "You can't make the Goal GREEN. (You CAN get a secret ending though!)"
